How Solar Minimum can Affect Our Health, Communications, and Climate Change


Are you having periodic episodes of sleep issues? Can’t sleep? Wake up at 3am and can not go back to sleep?

What about time? Are you struggling with managing time or feeling as if time escapes you or as if you are in a time warp?

If you answered yes to any of those, keep reading.

If you have been following me on Facebook or Instagram, you may have noticed I have been talking a lot about space weather and how it has been affecting the planet and us as humans.  Yes, we as a species are evolving.

Many of the posts have been about how the incoming space weather may effect our sleep, moods, energy levels to GPS systems, cell phones and computer glitches not to mention effects on earthquakes, volcanic activity, hurricanes, blizzards, and more.

As humans, we see the sun rise and we see the sun set. We hear about events like solar eclipses and are like ooooo ahhhhh. However, the sun does change and it is currently changing.  Did you know this?

Enter The Solar Minimum

Since 2015, the sun began transitioning into what is called the solar minimum phase after a very intense solar maximum phase. This is a solar cycle the sun enters approximately every 11 years with a “grand” maximum phase approximately every 200 years.

The peak low period for the potential of solar minimum phase is forecast to enter between 2019-2020 with ignition of the potential grand solar minimum phase.

This basically means the sun’s activity is reduced to its lowest level and the sunspots and solar storms have quieted down a bit.  It is the “calm” phase of the sun.

Research shows that the last “Grand” solar minimum was believed to have occurred sometime between 1645 and 1715.

There are four major shifts that are affecting all life on earth right now known as space weather:

  1. Solar flare activity
  2. Solar wind storms from coronal holes
  3. Cosmic rays
  4. Geomagnetic storms

All these shifts with the sun weaken the earth’s magnetic fields. Since this cycle began, we have experienced an approximate 30% reduction of the earth’s magnetic fields and the acceleration of the shifting of the poles.

The strength of these magnetic fields is needed to shield all life on earth from harmful space weather particles. So understanding how this affects us is important so we know how to navigate.

Also, during this solar phase, earth will gradually cool with potentially colder, more eventful winters and has been likened to a mini-Ice Age.

A fairly recent study predicts that the next grand solar minimum could see the sun with almost a 7% reduction in light and heat – and this is 7% below the normal solar minimum.[1]

Valentina Zharkova, a professor of mathematics at Northumbria University in the UK, states  “… solar activity will fall by 60 percent during the 2030s to conditions last seen during the ‘mini ice age’ that began in 1645…”[2]

Don’t panic.  All in all, what is important to remember is that the sun-earth relationship is always in a constantly state of flux doing their magnificent dance in our solar system.

What are solar flares?

Solar flares are magnetic explosions that happen on areas of the sun called sun spots. The emit flashes of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation.

During a grand solar minimum phase, there are fewer sun spots emitting solar flares which means there is less CME’s bombarding the earth.

Because the solar flare activity is quieting down on the sun, we are experiencing another interesting phenomenon… coronal hole storms.

The Coronal Hole Storms

 “Coronal holes are vast regions in the sun’s atmosphere where the sun’s magnetic field opens up and allows streams of solar particles to escape the sun as the fast solar wind.” (NASA)[3]

We have been experiencing over the past few months more coronal hole activity that spews massive streams of solar wind that can affect the earth’s magnetic field causing what is called a geomagnetic storm.

These solar wind storms can cause disruptions to communication systems like cell phones as well as GPS systems because of the friction satellites experience at the time.

Cosmic Rays

You might be saying to yourself what pseudo-science is this? I assure you this is a thing and can be verified through NASA website.

According to NASA: “There are unique space weather effects that get stronger during solar minimum. For example, the number of galactic cosmic rays that reach Earth’s upper atmosphere increases during solar minimum. Galactic cosmic rays are high energy particles accelerated toward the solar system by distant supernova explosions and other violent events in the galaxy.”[4]

Cosmic rays can “trigger larger flash floods, hailstorms and – due to jet stream disturbance and mixing of atmospheric layers – local long-duration precipitation events (e.g. atmospheric rivers)”[5] as we have been witnessing over the plain states this year.

It can also trigger earthquakes, lightening, and volcanoes and other tectonic anomalies.

How Does Space Weather Affect Us?

To me it is validating and interesting to see what science is beginning to say to substantiate what many of us empaths, healers, and others in the spiritual community have been saying using different terminologies.

The effects from this recent sun cycle began to amplify how we are experiencing things after the solar eclipse of August 2017.

We can anticipate more earthquakes, volcanoes, lightning, and other electric events and an enhanced risk for a solar flare that can disrupt our power grid.[6]

There is even some discussion in the scientific communities about the biologic effects of space weather on humans.  There is more space radiation entering the earth’s atmosphere due to the earth’s weakened magnetic field. This means humans are more susceptible to the influx of cosmic rays, harmful electromagnetic radiation and space particles.

Some of you have heard me talk about the science behind the space weather and earth’s weakening magnetic fields and how it may impact our health.

What might you personally experience? All are deemed unexplainable or amplified for those with existing current medical conditions.

  • Bouts of inability to sleep
  • Bouts of serious fatigue or mega sluggishness
  • Cardiac arrythmias
  • Chest pressures
  • Mood shifts
  • Time warps or feeling as if you are. May feel as if time is speeding up and then slowing down.
  • Emergence of unresolved old wounds or traumas
  • Spiritual awakening and growth
  • Heightened sensitivities or empathic abilities

Those who are at greatest risks? Those with cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, and sleep disorders as well as those who fly. You can read about this from the research conducted about space weather from the University of NH.[7]

Here is another article from the European Space Agency about the biological effects of space weather radiation.[8]

Please do not go into panic mode. I do not write this to create chaos and doom and gloom. The intention is to make you more aware and awake to the effects space weather might have on your human body and mind.

We forget we are made up of mostly water that conducts electricity and the heart and brain are centers for electrical conduction. So how can we NOT be affected?

The point of writing this is to help you navigate some of what you might experience and better explain some of the symptoms especially when the medical community cannot explain or help you.

I have learned over the years that the “not knowing” factor can be quite debilitating to our very being. So education, understanding, and doing the self-care work are key.

As humans, we are evolving and experiencing some mass spiritual awakening that is coinciding with all of this. We are healing generational traumas, old belief systems and patterns.

It is important moving forward if you are sensitive to the space weather and learn tools to manage these effects.

In Summary, What to Expect During Solar Minimum or a Potential Grand Solar Minimum Phase

If the space weather forecast is correct, we may be entering a grand solar minimum phase. Here are some things to consider:

Interestingly, some research connects the grand solar minimum periods or aka the ‘bad-weather periods’ to times of also relative peace, reason and of improvements of human rights.

Is this a surprise?

I have seen just in my own work a surge in humanity seeking, spiritual awakening, and desires for deep healing. With that comes some disruption.

In the climate:

  • Ionization of atmospheric molecules –Cloud nucleation
  • More cloud formation and erratic precipitation.
  • Long-term cooling of the earth
  • More snow and ice reflect solar radiation
  • More localized larger flash flooding
  • More Hailstorms and lightening
  • Crop damage, local surface heating, wildfires and biological damage can all be accelerated by an increase in UV radiation
  • Earthquakes and volcanoes and other tectonic anomalies triggered by cosmic ray influxes

Space Weather

  • Weaker solar magnetic field aka solar flares
  • More cosmic ray influx from space
  • Longer coronal hole wind storms
  • More UV radiation entering the earth
  • The shift in our galaxy moving from its protective magnetic bubble

In Our Health

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Bouts of serious fatigue or mega sluggishness
  • Cardiac arrythmias
  • Chest pressures
  • Mood shifts
  • Time warps or feeling as if you are. May feel as if time is speeding up and then slowing down.
  • Emergence of unresolved old wounds or traumas
  • Spiritual awakening and growth
  • Heightened sensitivities or empathic abilities
  • Joint pains
  • Headaches
  • Vivid dreams

Other Disruptions

  • More electric events that affect communications such as cell phones and GPS systems
  • An enhanced risk for a solar flare that can disrupt our power grid
  • Increase risk of more radiation when flying
  • Deconstruction – political systems, relationships, jobs

As humans, we are experiencing massive spiritual upgrades as we deconstruct old beliefs systems and patterns. The storms, quakes, and tremors taking place on earth are also taking place within us, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

All these external experiences occurring reflect a universal transformation process affecting all levels of existence. It is important to get in alignment with these cycles energetically to master the flow of change within us. The changes taking place have a higher purpose.

The mainstream systems such as political, religious, media, and financial will try to gaslight the masses out of fear and desire to control. Resist the urge to go relinquish your natural born rights and freedoms. This does not mean to be a shithead. It means to step into your soul path.

The old ways of power grabs, belief systems, and patterns are being deconstructed for a higher spiritual evolutionary reasoning beyond our own comprehension.

Those in power do not like this and will attempt to gaslight and control the masses.  When we allow others to control us and force poisons into our bodies, minds, and spirit against our will, we give up responsibility to nurture our divine selves.

But the cosmic events and space weather do not lie.

We are in an interesting time in history literally and metaphorically. As we go through these multi layered shifts, we may feel out of balance at times – physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. These are NORMAL when going through soul growth and expansion.

Actions to Take

  • Move out of the head and into the heart and gut space.
  • Listen to the wisdoms of the body as it has a wealth of knowledge for you to tap into.
  • Turn off tv programming that creates fear and agendas that are not in alignment with your very core being of who you are
  • Be careful of the inner critic. Don’t always trust that old chatter.
  • Trust that no matter what, your soul has your back.
  • Treat Your Body as a Temple. That means refrain from putting toxins into it.
  • Grow your own food or support a local, organic farmer.
  • You are more than the reality that you perceive. We are frequency and vibration. So work with the space weather to become a master of the flow.
  • Find a competent well skilled healer – who has done the work and walks the walk – to help you reset your nervous system, immune system, and endocrine systems.
  • Be aware of your triggers and work on healing those cords
  • Practice daily grounding, meditation, and gratitude
  • Release fear and step into your light and power.

What is happening with our space weather is just to help you better understand what is happening within and around us so we know what actions to take and know how to master the energetic ebb and flow of change.

New Study Show How Going Into Nature Can Lower Stress


What if I said there is a free or low cost pill to help you with your stress, would you want to know more about how to get it?

What if I said to you that pill was in your own back yard or within walking distance for many with no lines of people, would you want to know more?

What if I said going into the woods or in nature is better than any pill to reduce stress, would you believe me?

Many of you have seen the pictures and hear about my journeys in nature and what it does for me, my anxiety, stress, CPTSD and my soul if you follow me on Healing With Spirit on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram.

For me, going into nature is a way for me to ground, reboot, relax, release, and connect to the divine around me and within me. I especially find something very comforting being in the mountains, but woods, trees, water, ocean, beach can all work for me too. It’s one of my main tools to me manage my triggers, anxiety and CPTSD.

For me it has been better than any pill ever given to me or as this study argues “nature pills could be a low-cost solution to reduce the negative health impacts stemming from growing urbanization and indoor lifestyles dominated by screen viewing”.

Here’s a study coming out of the University of Michigan that says “Just 20 minutes of contact with nature will lower stress hormone levels”

STUDY SUMMARY:

“Taking at least 20 minutes out of your day to stroll or sit in a place that makes you feel in contact with nature will significantly lower your stress hormone levels. That’s the finding of a study that has established for the first time the most effective dose of an urban nature experience. Healthcare practitioners can use this discovery to prescribe ‘nature-pills’ in the knowledge that they have a real measurable effect.”

 

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

In Japan, this is called “Shinrin-yoku” (Oprah), which was first introduced by Dr. Qing Li  and the Forest Agency of the Japanese government in 1982 when doctors began prescribing spending time in nature to help their stressed-out patients.

Shinrin-yoku 森林浴, which can be defined as “taking in the forest atmosphere or forest bathing”, has been receiving increasing attention in Japan in recent years for its capacity to provide relaxation and reduce stress. Since 2004, there have been studies to ascertain the physiological effects of Shinrin-yoku within the framework of the “Therapeutic Effects of Forests” project.  (NCBI; NIH)

Shinrin-yoku is considered to be one of the most accessible ways to get in touch with the natural world and to lower excessive stress to levels that are commensurate with what our bodies are “expected” to cope with.

5 SHINRIN-YOKU TIPS:

Here are 5 simple steps to remember when practicing shinrin-yoku:

  1. Leave your phone, camera or any other distractions behind. Do not take them with you.
  2. Leave behind your goals and especially your expectations.
  3. It is important to press the PAUSE from time to time, to look more closely at a leaf or notice the sensation.
  4. Find a comfy spot to take a seat and just listen to the sounds around you. Take it all in.
  5. If others go with you, take note. It is important to resist any form of talking or any other distractions until the end of the walk. At the end you share your experiences with each other. I personally find doing this with others challenging.

Have You Experienced This During An MRI?

Recently,  I went in for a repeat brain MRI from 2010 as a result of a previous brain bleed I’ve had.

I am a survivor of abuse with a history of PTSD and anxiety and of course they asked if I was claustrophobic and I said no.

Surprisingly, I was kind of surprised that as I entered into the MRI room I was experiencing anxiety. Once I laid down on the table and enter the machine, I began reciting the gokai, which are the 5 Japanese reiki principles to live by.

By the end of the third time reciting the gokai, my anxiety was completely calm. I was in a calm complete state a presence with a notable reduction in respiration.

In the beginning of the scans, I began to see flashes of a pinhole white light in my third eye which Drew my attention to actually pay attention to what I am witnessing. It was like a flash going off on a camera but in a pinhole size.

This followed with  a black spot  notable on the upper  right side  in my third I’d vision .

Following this I began seeing nebula type formations in waves. The colors were of a translucent mustard seed yellow and an oblong shape moving from my left to my upper right with purple formations in the middle.

Right after the text said to the next scan will take 5 minutes, the next set of visualizations I saw started more on the upper right side of flashes of an oblong shape that was of a darker yellow and color. This later began to continue to flash in the more it flashed the clear the images got of my entire brain

The next set of images she said was going to take 2 minutes. With that followed images showing various vascular sections in my brain and I even began feeling tingling in my right foot which dissipated right after this portion of the scan completed.

The final scan was very similar to the beginning with a general nebula of colors flashing in waves mostly in the yellows, Blues and purple hues.

I asked the tech if there were different images being done on my brain as I had visualizations while in the scanner. I think she was a little confused by my question because it’s not a typical question people would ask. So I went on to tell her that depending on which scan she did I saw images of my brain as well as images of the vascular portions of my brain. She did verify that there were vascular portions done on my brain.

Now whether or not this is a verifiable experience doesn’t matter. However, since I am a very deeply spiritual person and love it when science backs up a spiritual experience, I’m putting this out there because maybe some scientists would love to use this to create a study on the brains of those who are intuitive or empathic.

That would be quite interesting though wouldn’t it for the scientific community?

When Medical Science Can Not Explain Your Symptoms. How To Know If It Is Spiritual?

How have you been feeling lately? Experiencing a lot of unexplainable stomach, digestive, fatigue, emotional or other physical issues lately? If you have then you are not alone.

Springtime marks a time for renewal, rebirth, and new beginnings.  There are lots of changes in the air.  Do you feel it? This past weekend was a very powerful weekend energetically and a key turning point. We have all been experiencing huge waves of energy shifts and purges over the past couple years, but especially over the past several months. Some have been quite pleasant and for others is has been quite the struggle.

We are emerging from the darkness where we faced our fears and let go what no longer served us. As we did this, we also re-evaluated our own actions and took responsibility for where we are at in our life. Metaphorically, some of our houses burnt down to the ground, and we are rebuilding starting with a solid foundation. We have purged to our bare nakedness of our soul. The past has shaped us for what is really important in our lives shaping our priorities and placing us on our spiritual path.

For those of us who have been aware of these shifts and purges and did not resist the change, lessons are now emerging and tensions are lifting. For those resisting or ignoring these shifts, the lessons have been in many cases extremely painful.

It is time to shine your true self and have the courage to just be. This period marks a time for a refreshing change. The messages coming from the Universe and our soul are very strong right now and have been so for the past couple weeks since the full moon, solar eclipse, and spring equinox.

Our life purposes are being revealed to us if we are listening and not resisting. It is important to drop the struggle and resistance. Hence, the conflict between the material world and the spiritual world. Yes, we need food, clothing and shelter. However, everything else is what society dictates you should have and should need with enormous pressure. These lessons have been difficult because it was important for us to emerge with greater wisdom and clarity.

Why are you resisting so much?

Stop fighting what you clearly do not understand. You can not bury your head in the sand and wish your troubles will go away. In this case time does not take care of your troubles. All this resistance and fighting is only giving power to all those things you have been struggling so hard to get rid of. You empower the very things you do not want.

So stop it.

Stop it now.

Your very thoughts create ripples. Your fears create ripples. Your actions create ripples. Your reactions create ripples. The ripple effect is magnified. How we conduct ourselves, act and react have been magnified which in turn creates stronger manifestations and at a faster rate.

These waves of energy shifts come at a time when the Universe has been beckoning for us to follow our soul’s path. The Universe has been communicating with us. Have you been listening?

Are we so busy being busy that we are ignoring what the Universe is telling us and ignoring our soul’s cries? If so, if you notice, those who have been ignoring and are still ignoring seem to have the more difficult harder lessons.

Over the past six months and extending over the past couple years have been met with huge challenges, obstacles, hard lessons, and enormous purging. None of us are immune to this no matter how connected we are to the Universe nor how well we practice what we preach. We are still human with a soul having a human experience.

Unexplainable Symptoms?

Lately, I have been seeing quite a few people in my office with very obscure symptoms that the medical community deems unexplainable. This is very frustrating to many of those trying to find a solution to their troubles with no answers in sight from the medical community. Here are a couple stories I am going to share with you. Maybe you can relate.

Case #1: There was one client I saw who had been suffering over 2 years with a severe skin rash. They have gone to every specialist and had every test done with no prevail to getting better except the toll it is starting to take on this person mentally, physically, and spiritually. After spending an hour with this person, I began to see a pattern. I am not saying this person does not have a medical condition as I believe there is a medical condition that we are addressing such as some delayed food allergies and vitamin deficiencies. However, what I am saying is whatever the underlying medical condition is, it is becoming magnified and explosive due to the resistance of addressing the spiritual needs, healing past traumas, and forgive those who have wronged them. When addressing the traumas, it was evident that person was not fully ready to heal those old wounds, and not clearly understanding the connection. Science has taught society to disregard the mind-body connection and to treat symptoms disregarding causes. Beginning the healing process is a start for this person. The rest is up to them.

Case #2: This person has been battling reflux and swallowing issues most of their life. However, over the past several months and years, it has progressively gotten worse which began to affect their sleep, moods, and productivity leading them to a deep depression. They began experiencing enormous mood swings which began to affect their internal belief systems questioning their sanity. What they realized they were experiencing were spiritual purges releasing old traumas, abuse, and hurt. Once assessed, we addressed the underlying medicals including a delayed food allergy to over 24 foods with the most offending being baker’s yeast and dairy, the vitamin D and magnesium deficiency, past childhood traumas, and spiritual needs. They began to understand the differences between a spiritual purge releasing what no longer served them from the physical body and mental issues.

Case #3: This person suffers from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and irritable bowel syndrome which became immensely inflated over the past several months to the point of being debilitating. However, despite the numerous doctors and tests, this person has continued to get worse, and the escalating symptoms unexplainable by the medical establishment which in turn increased the stress, and anxiety levels of this client. With basic medical recommendations and addressing the spiritual needs, the person is finally on the mend.

What I am finding that all these individuals have in common is the underlying medical conditions being explosively magnified a hundred fold with the soul’s cries not being heard or ignored. These are all cases where science and healthcare vs the spiritual purges and resistance to change. These cases all were unexplainable medically.

Anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing:

Today is the Boston Marathon with last Wednesday, April 15th marking the anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing. What a day to have the marathon during these sudden bursts of energy waves of change.

At that time of the Marathon bombing, I was teaching medical classes at a local college near the Marathon finish line. Classes were cancelled that day because of the marathon. I wrote about my experiences of that tragic day and the subsequent events that followed. My journey Boston Strong was quite a spiritual one with many revelations.

We hear so many times about the power of prayer and healing, and many of us I believe sometime doubt how powerful it really is. Well I can attest to you the overwhelming feeling I was experiencing at the growing memorial site was just that. I wish everyone could have felt and experienced the immense love, prayers, healing, and unity on a global scale at the newly developing and growing memorial site that I experienced that day. Words
cannot describe it. It can only be felt.

I returned to the site a couple days ago to help a friend set up for a fitness expo promoting the Marathon. It brought back a lot of memories. What I chose to focus on what the strength, tenacity, and spiritual messages I received from that tragic event in history. It taught me how far I have come personally and spiritually and how important spirituality is to our very health and well-being.

Messages From The Universe:

For those who live in the northern hemisphere, we are reminded about what springtime means. The birds are chirping. The snow is almost gone. Flowers are blooming. It is time we let go and trust that our soul is leading us on the right path.

Also over the past few weeks, the presence of messages from the Universe, Angels, our Spirit Guide, and loved ones are increasingly becoming more prominent.  Cardinals, mourning doves, and turkey have been great message bearers confirming what I believed to be resistance to following your soulful path is manifesting into very painful lessons and in many cases explosive illnesses especially in the gut area.

The messages the cardinal has been sending is about brightening your environment. Add some color to our life and remember that everything we do is of importance. The song of the cardinal is reminding us to listen more closely and pay attention. All the answers we seek are closer than we think.

The mourning doves have been equally as vocal too. In this case, they are reminding us to stop a moment, pause and take a deep breathe. They are letting us know we are divinely supported. In order to soar to new heights, we must get out of our own way. Recognize the resistance and blocks preventing us from taking flight and surrender to the higher power … God, The Universe, Mother Earth … and allow the Universe to help us, guide us, and be the wind beneath our wings.

Resistance is futile if you have not noticed. So let go of all the chaos, pain, turmoil that is blocking you from soaring the skies and finding the peace you have been seeking within.

Finally, the lessons and messages of the great turkey. Turkey has been quite active as a message bearer since Easter Sunday where 20 of them (including 2 white ones) flew onto the house roof and into the trees in the yard to roost for the night to this very active male courting to females every morning, fluffing his feathers, and making his presence known. 

The turkeys displayed and vocalized with confidence. Hence, have the courage to shine your true self brightly and with confidence. It is important to recognize that what we see right now is reality shifting in ways we never thought possible and that what we are truly looking for is just  around the corner. Most chaos happens just before our dreams come true. These are all gentle reminders from the Universe.

Finally, I was asked to speak at a church over the weekend and I decided to talk about this topic. After service ended, a woman named Kimberley had posted a photo onto my facebook wall with Doreen Virtue’s Angel numbers. When I saw her post, it reaffirmed what I spoke about earlier and the path we are all on.


So what do we do now?

It is time to press the re-set button. If you have not already, it is important to start to build a sense of awareness and be extra mindful of our actions and our thoughts. Doing so will create the transition with greater ease. This is where we also learn how to use this energy.

Conquer fear with compassion, courage and love. The energies that are shifting are quite magnificent if you are listening to the calls of your soul. If you do not like how you are feeling or where you are at, then it is time to have more faith in your soul’s path and create the opposite energetically of what you have been doing. Your soul is crying out to you. Listen to your soul, not what society tells you to do.

In regards to our health, our bodies are designed to heal itself. However, we also have free will to ignore the body’s needs, abuse it, and allow it to get sick through bad decisions and poor lifestyle choices.  Let go of any resistance, past traumas, past pains and anything else that no longer serves us. Your unexplainable medical issues just be one of a spiritual nature. However, only you truly know for sure.

We are experiencing the ride of our lives. We have choices. Let’s choose to rock this world and enjoy the ride.

Why Meditation

One of the most common reasons that people cite for wanting to learn meditation is to reduce stress.  Life is always going to be full of challenges, and a life without some turmoil is not only impossible but is also undesirable.

A considerable amount of research has shown that meditationhas benefits on mental & physical health, including a reduction inproneness to depression, an increase in emotional positivity, and an increasedability to deal with life’s inevitable stresses.

People often think of meditation as being nothing more thanrelaxation.  Meditation, however, not only involves relaxation (thecessation of unnecessary effort) but promotes mindfulness, which helps thestress-sufferer to recognize unhelpful patterns of thought that give rise to thestress response, and also involves the active cultivation of positive mentalstates such as loving-kindness, compassion, patience, and energy.

Conquer Toxic Holiday Stress

When we think of the holidays we smile with nostalgic visions of celebrations, roasting chestnuts, caroling, crackling fires, happy Cleaver-like families, and everything we asked for under the ‘ol Christmas tree. As much as the holidays bring love, holiday cheer, & family gatherings so do the winter blues, stress, anxiety, and especially the financial pressure to buy gifts, travel or entertain.  For many, the holidays are the hardest time of the year – emotionally, psychologically, financially, spiritually & physically.  With the economy and consumer confidence at its lowest point since the great depression, families are struggling more than ever with finding a healthy balance between work, home & personal needs. Welcome to one of the most stressful periods of the year and this year is bound to be one of the most stressful.  According to a 2006 survey by the American Psychological Association, 44%  of women and 31% of men report increased stress over the holidays.

Stress is different for everyone and what may be stressful for one person may not be stressful for another and stress appears in many different ways.  Stress is a growing epidemic taking a serious toll on our physical health, mental health, and spiritual health with the majority of Americans are living with moderate to high levels of stress according to the APA.  Stress that is not managed can have dire consequences without help and change.

According to a University of California at San Diego study from 1973-2001, deaths from heart disease peak in December and January with it spiking on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.1  Stress is linked to the top six leading causes of death and is another large contributing factor to “Merry Christmas Coronary” and the “Happy New Year Heart Attack”. “Although there can be many causes for a heart attack, stress during the holidays has become more frequently associated with a higher number of heart attack patients,” says Kelly Larkin, MD, emergency department medical director, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.2

Also the increase of depression and anxiety during the holidays as well. However, despite popular belief, the increase in suicides during the holidays is a myth according to Mayo Clinic.

There is no avoiding stress, but there ways to better manage your stress levels.   Oooooooook?  So how do we conquer this holiday stress?

First, in order to change the effects of your stress, you have to learn to recognize and identify when you’re feeling stressed and become more aware of  the signs, symptoms, and triggers. Your body tells you everything you need to know by sending you signs and signals.  Are you listening to them?

Some of the early signs of stress can include:

  • Unhealthy eating habits
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle tension especially in your shoulders and neck
  • Headaches

Here are some statistics from the American Psychological Association’s (APA) 2010 Survey*

  • Overweight Children report to be more likely to have trouble falling asleep (15%),  have headaches (15%), eating too much or too little (32%),  or feel angry and getting into fights (9%) than non-overweight children, which are often symptoms of stress.
  • Money (76%), work (70%) and the economy (65%) remain the most cited sources of stress for Americans during this time of  “Non” Depression.
  • Parents report similar sources of stress citing money (80% ), work (72%), and the economy (72%) as stressors, and 73% also report that family responsibilities.
  • “While the majority of parents don’t think their children are strongly affected by their stress, children report otherwise. Nearly three-quarters (69 percent) of parents say that their stress has only a slight or no impact on their children, yet 91 percent of children report they know their parent is stressed because they observe a multitude of behaviors, such as yelling, arguing and complaining.” *
  • The most common reason for not managing stress well enough is “too busy or not having enough time”.
  • “Two-fifths of adults reported overeating or eating unhealthy foods because of stress in the past month”.
  • One-third skipped a meal due to stress in the past month.
  • More than four in ten report laying awake at night in the past month.
  • “The most common physical symptoms of stress reported were irritability (45%), fatigue (41%) and lack of energy or motivation (38%).”

The next step is to choose a way to deal with your stress. For instance, no matter how dire your situation, find something positive in your life to focus on and find gratitude in that.  You can not change how someone treats you or what situations have been given to you, BUT you can choose how you react to them.  Another way, is avoidance. However, avoiding the event or thing that gives you stress is not always possible especially if that is family. So the better way is changing your thoughts and how you react to people, things or situations.

As you go through the holiday season pay attention to you – not the ego self, but the inner you!

Here are some tips for dealing with holiday stress:

  • You can’t change what you can not control.  So why worry? How is that going to make your situation better?
  • Identify your triggers.  Knowing what triggers your stress, gives you time to prepare and prevent toxic holiday stress from ruining your holidays.
  • Stay positive and try to see the good in every situation.
  • Eat a well balanced diet for your needs
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Avoid toxins such as cigarettes, alcohol and caffeine.
  • Avoid the foods that could be making you sick.
  • You can say NO. Do not over commit yourself and over schedule
  • Seek alternative therapies such as reiki, meditation, acupuncture or massage therapy.
  • Avoid conflict and try to resolve existing conflict the best you can.
  • See every adversity as a chance to grow, excel and be better than before.
  • Find a healthy outlet to reduce stress such as yoga, exercise, tai chi, painting, or hiking.
  • Find balance – Your mind, body, and spirit equally need relaxation and attention.
  • If you have health issues such as heart disease, don’t delay seeking medical attention. The delay in seeking medical attention is cited as one of the reasons for an increase in heart related deaths.

Check out a few upcoming events that can help keep you balanced, increase clarity, reduce stress, and bring more love, peace, and understanding to your life.  Meditation for instance has been clinically proven to reduce stress and is the oldest method for stress reduction around.

Can Our Politicians Place Our Children At Risk For Profits?

I was teaching a called Medical Law and Ethics at a local college and I placed this question to my students in light of what is happening in the Presidential Election with Gov Perry and his stance on HPV Vaccine. I would like your take.

Gov Perry of Texas has made quite the headlines backing vaccinating every child with the HPV Vaccine.  And from the research we did, he ONLY met the woman dying from cervical cancer AFTER he was pressured by MERCK to pass legislation.

I asked my students to research a few things

  1. QUESTION: What are the top 10 leading causes of death for women (cancer) ~ ANSWER: #1 was breast cancer with over 40,000 annually and over 200,000 diagnosed with breast cancer annually. Where was Cervical cancer? There are approximately 4,000 deaths annually due to cervical cancer 4,000 with approximately 12,000 diagnosed with cervical cancer and was NOT even close on the CDC list.
  2. QUESTION: How many girls are in the USA between 10-14? We wanted this statistic to see how many girls would be FORCED to get this vaccine if Gov. Perry was elected as President and he made it law that everyone had to be vaccinated. ~ ANSWER: over 10, 000,000.
  3. QUESTION: How much does the HPV vaccine cost? ~ ANSWER: Average answer was about $170 PER dose.
  4. QUESTION: How much does the Pharmaceutical companies stand to profit if they convince politicians to vaccinate EVERYONE!!!! ~ ANSWER: Just first year alone? OVER $1.7 BILLION MINIMUM to as much as $5.1 BILLION FIRST year profit

Cervical cancer has one of the HIGHEST cure rates, yet some of the most horrific side effects such as “Life-threatening allergic reactions” with records documenting 3,589 Adverse reactions related to Gardasil between May 2009 and September 2010, including 213 Cases resulting in PERMANENT Disability AND 16 DEATHS per Judicial Watch

This is not to mention most of these terminal cancer cases are due to lack of regular pap tests and practice of safe sex. It is still recommended that the BEST prevention is regular GYN check-ups.

Gov. Perry wanted to pass legislation to vaccinate EVERYONE in Texas. What would happen if he did that as President? Merck btw was one of his BIGGEST campaign contributors for Gov Perry.

Lastly, here is the FIRST sentence on the CDC website “Screening tests and the HPV vaccine can help prevent some of the most common types of cancer in women.”
